Update: This consultation has ended. A design standard for accessible transit stops and shelters will be developed in 2023.

Did you know that Prince Edward County has a public transit system? County Transit provides both a fixed-route transit system and specialized and on-demand services.

The municipality has received provincial funding to enhance the transit system with bus shelters. The municipality must consult with the public before the shelters are installed. Public input can help determine what makes an accessible bus stop or shelter. This consultation is required under the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act. We are looking for your help in creating a transit system that serves all members of our community!

Considerations for accessibility might include:

  • Barrier-free access to the stop or shelter. This includes the path of access from nearby parking spaces.
  • Landing pad for wheelchairs and mobility devices to load/unload from the bus.
  • Providing seamless, solid ground surfaces.
  • Adequate space inside the shelter or at the stop for a wheelchair. This includes turnaround space.
  • Glass walls on any structure for easy visibility.
  • Maps, signage and information printed in high-contrast, plain language and large font size.
  • Benches include arm-rests to assist with sitting and standing up. Bench seats are wide enough to accommodate all bodies.
  • Grid-powered lighting to ensure reliable illumination of the shelter or stop.

Municipal staff discussed bus shelter accessibility with the Accessibility Advisory Committee in August. The committee's feedback and public input will help staff create an accessible design standard for future bus stops and shelters.
