What is included in a Cultural Heritage Master Plan?

A Cultural Heritage Master Plan (CHMP) includes:

    • A vision statement
    • A review of existing policies, procedures, and guidelines for heritage conservation and management
    • Engagement with the public and Indigenous communities to identify opportunities to improve the conservation of cultural heritage resources that are significant to the community

Furthermore, a CHMP includes a Cultural Heritage Landscape (CHL) Strategy to identify and evaluate potential CHLs in Prince Edward County and develop recommendations to address opportunities and barriers identified during the analysis and consultation.

What is a built heritage resource?

A building, structure, monument, installation or any manufactured remnant that contributes to a property’s cultural heritage value or interest as identified by a community, including an Indigenous community. Built heritage resources are generally located on property that has been designated under Parts IV or V of the Ontario Heritage Act, or included on local, provincial, and/or federal registers.

What is a cultural heritage landscape?

A defined geographical area that may have been modified by human activity and include features such as structures, spaces, archaeological sites, or natural elements that are valued together for their interrelationship, meaning, or association.

Examples may include, but are not limited to:

    • Heritage conservation districts designated under the Ontario Heritage Act
    • Villages, parks, gardens, battlefields, main streets and neighbourhoods, cemeteries, trailways, viewsheds, natural areas and industrial complexes of heritage significance
    • Areas recognized by federal or international designation authorities (e.g. a National Historic Site or District designation, or a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage Site)
    • Sacred sites

    Cultural heritage landscapes should include:

    • Areas that reflect historic themes, styles, and associations important to the development of Prince Edward County, a community in Prince Edward County, or Indigenous Nations.
    • Areas that contain a grouping of cultural heritage resources
    • Landscapes that are valued by a community or Indigenous Nation as revealed through public consultations, oral histories, written documents such as local histories, newspaper articles, planning documents, etc.

What cultural heritage resources will be included in the scope of work for the Cultural Heritage Master Plan?

The Cultural Heritage Master Plan will use a strategic approach to heritage conservation and the management of built heritage resources and cultural heritage landscapes in Prince Edward County that reflect the community's vast history ranging from its Indigenous heritage to present.

Archaeological resources are not included within the study scope for this project. However, archaeological resources may be considered in the future.
