Cannot Judge the Past by Today's Standards

This statue is a monument to remember someone who had a meaningful role in our nation's history. Specifically, to remember those positve contributions. Period.

1) You cannot judge a person in the past based on today's standards.

Try to think critically here. Let's say in a 100 years we think it's immoral to get married. Or fish or hunt. Or drive a car and pollute the world. Or drink bottled water. Or eat fast food. Or have pets. Do you want to be judged at that time by your actions today? Shall we remove your monument/grave stone? Would that right the wrongs that you committed? Set your bias aside and really think about that.

2) Toppling a statue does nothing to further the cause of equality.

Who knew the cure for racism and injustice was simply knocking down statues. Good for us, glad we solved that long standing problem. Seem ridiculous? It's because it is. Taking down this statue will do nothing to further equality, peace and justice for all. I beleive that we are all equal in this world, but sadly there are still some that do not. How do we reach them? Teach them? Engage and build a community with them? Will taking down this or other statues actually help? Of course not. Instead, change the conversation. Leave it up and let's keep talking about. Spread awareness. Keep the conversation going. I bet there are many people who weren't even aware of these past events until these discussions started. Don't burry the statues and hide the past. Get it out in the open. Those that forget the past are doomed to repeat it.
