Consultation has concluded

The County of Prince Edward is providing residents with an update on the locations where sidewalks will be reconstructed or repaired in 2020. In addition, the County is giving residents the opportunity to provide input on future sidewalk maintenance locations throughout the County.

Annual Sidewalk Reconstruction/Construction Projects

Each year the municipality conducts two annual sidewalk reconstruction/construction projects: an annual ongoing maintenance project, which is completed through the Operations Department, and an annual capital reconstruction/construction project, which is completed through the Development Services Department.

This year, the Operations and Development Services departments are providing residents with the reconstruction/construction lists for 2020. Staff are gathering input from residents to assist with determining additional locations requiring reconstruction and repairs.

Annual Ongoing Maintenance Project

Funding from the municipal operating budget allows for the repair or replacement of small sections of sidewalks/curbs or single panels that are showing surface discontinuity and surface damage. These repairs are regulated as part of the Minimum Maintenance Standards under O.Reg. 239/02 of the Municipal Act.

Staff undertake annual inspections to compile a list of sidewalks panels and/or curbs that are in need of repair that year. The Operations Department supervises these repairs with work being completed by a combination of internal staff and hired contractors. Internal staff do the patch repairs on sidewalks, while trip hazard mitigation grinding and full replacement repairs are completed by contractors through the procurement process. The maintenance repair list for panel replacements in 2020 is available for viewing in the documents section. This work is anticipated to take place in August and September 2020.

Annual Capital Reconstruction/Construction Project

Funding from the municipal capital budget covers the replacement of large sections of sidewalks/curbs, the extension of a section of sidewalk, and the installation of a new sidewalk where one does not exist. These sections of sidewalk are larger in scale, such as half a street or an entire street. The list of sidewalk replacement locations is determined with input from the Operations Department staff, when they find large sections that are beyond their scope of work, and members of the public, who have brought areas of concern to the attention of the municipality.

The sidewalk replacement list is available for viewing in the documents section. Please note: not all locations can be replaced in one year. Work that is not completed will be carried over to next year's list. It is also important to be aware that not all sidewalk locations requiring replacement are on the list provided. A large number of sidewalk sections require work; however, the municipality can only do a portion of sidewalks at a time. The list only includes sidewalk locations that have been deemed priority. The capital project work is anticipated to take place in October, and work that cannot be completed this year will included on next year's list.

Have Your Say

The sidewalk map tool below (or see link here) allows you to pin sidewalk locations and identify the type of sidewalk deficiencies in that area. Multiple choice options include:

  1. Areas to Expand the Sidewalk Width: Areas where the existing sidewalk is narrow
  2. Areas to Replace the Existing Sidewalk: Areas where the existing sidewalk has severe cracking, distortion and/or eroded/broken edge
  3. Areas to Extend the Sidewalk: Areas where the sidewalk should be extended where there is currently no sidewalk.

For each pin you add to the map, you can also upload your own photo of the location and add a comment.
