Transit Program Refresh

Prince Edward County is updating its public transit program with help from the Provincial Community Transportation Grant. This update will help plan a better transit system for the next 3–5 years.

Background

In 2020, the County launched County Transit, its first public transit system. It helps people get to work, school, appointments, and more. This is a municipal service contracted out and operated by Quinte Transit. Learn more at www.countytransit.ca.

Why the Refresh?

The current transit plan is based on research from 2018. Since then, the County has changed, with more growth predicted, especially in Picton and Wellington. There are also challenges with hiring and keeping workers in the County. A better transit system can help. The County also wants to support seniors, youth, families, and workers who need better ways to get around.

Provincial funding for our transit system is also changing as our Community Transportation Grant comes to an end in 2026. We need to develop a plan that is financially sustainable and efficiently run.

Transit experts from Left Turn, Right Turn are helping with the update. The project has four phases:

Review – What’s working? What’s not?
Scenarios – What could transit look like in the future?
Recommendations – Use public input on these scenarios to shape a plan.
Report – Share the plan with Council for consideration.

How Can You Get Involved?

From January to August 2025, there will be many ways to join in:

Quick polls or info sessions
Longer surveys, youth hackathons, or focus groups
Input from groups that serve specific populations like seniors, youth, people with disabilities, low-income residents, students, and employers

Opportunities to participate will be posted here on Have Your Say, and communicated through municipal channels such as Facebook, Instagram, X, the Municipal Community Newsletter, and at community events.

Current Engagement Opportunity:

Public Consultation Event on August 18, 2025, drop-in format 4-7pm at Picton Town Hall (2 Ross St, Picton). Discover some exciting possibilities for getting around PEC, share your thoughts on County Transit’s future, and enjoy a Baked Potato Bar. A series of illustrated panels will showcase realistic options for improving County Transit, to better serve the needs of PEC residents. Transit staff and consultants will be on-site to walk you through the proposals and answer your questions.
